Is induction of labour done with misoprostol?

Misoprostol is a medicine related to prostaglandins, substances that help the cervix soften, thin and open. It may be given as a tablet by a route chosen by the maternity team. The team checks contractions and the baby's heart rate because the response can vary. If the cervix becomes ready, contractions may continue without another medicine; if progress is limited, another method may be discussed. Misoprostol is not appropriate in every pregnancy, including some situations where a previous uterine operation affects the choice of induction method.

Before treatment, tell the team about previous caesarean birth or uterine surgery, regular medicines, allergies, bleeding, painful contractions and reduced fetal movement. You may have examinations to assess the cervix and monitoring after a dose. Cramping, contractions, nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea can occur. Do not take extra doses or use misoprostol yourself; timing and repeat dosing must be directed by the maternity team. Tell the midwife or doctor immediately about heavy vaginal bleeding, severe or constant abdominal pain, faintness, breathing difficulty, a sudden gush of fluid, or contractions that are very frequent or do not ease. Contact the maternity unit promptly if your baby is moving less than usual or you feel unwell after going home. The team may pause treatment and assess you and the baby if the contraction pattern or heart-rate tracing is concerning.
