Is icsi needed before blastocyst culture?

ICSI is a fertilisation method in which an embryologist injects a single sperm into an egg. Blastocyst culture is a later laboratory stage in which embryos are maintained and observed as they develop toward the blastocyst stage. Therefore, blastocyst culture does not itself require ICSI.

A fertility team may recommend ICSI when there is a reason to use that fertilisation method, such as a sperm-related concern or a previous fertilisation issue. In other situations, conventional insemination may be considered. The clinic then decides whether suitable embryos should continue in culture, based on the treatment plan and laboratory assessment.

Ask why ICSI is being proposed or not proposed for your cycle, what fertilisation method will be used, and how embryos will be managed afterward. Discuss the intended culture duration, how embryo development is reviewed, and what happens if fewer embryos continue growing than expected.

Share relevant fertility history, previous treatment outcomes, medicines, and known sperm or egg factors with the team. Follow instructions for medication, monitoring, and collection appointments so the laboratory has the information needed for planning.
