Is hysterectomy done with robotic surgery system?

Short answer

A hysterectomy can be performed with a robotic surgery system when the surgeon considers that approach suitable for the patient.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Access
Instruments usually enter through small abdominal openings.

How robotic assistance works

In robotic-assisted hysterectomy, the surgeon controls instruments attached to a robotic platform from a nearby console. A camera provides a magnified view, while the instruments move through small abdominal openings. The system does not operate independently; the surgeon guides each movement and performs the procedure.

The operation may involve removing the uterus alone or also removing the cervix, fallopian tubes, or ovaries, depending on the reason for surgery and the agreed plan. Robotic assistance is one possible route into the pelvis, not a separate type of hysterectomy. Body anatomy, previous surgery, disease extent, available equipment, and surgical expertise all influence the choice.

Planning your procedure

Ask your gynaecological surgeon which approach is recommended and why. Discuss the planned organs to be removed, possible alternatives, anaesthesia, expected hospital stay, wound care, and activity restrictions. Tell the team about medicines, allergies, previous operations, and other health conditions.

Arrange practical help for the early recovery period and follow instructions about eating, drinking, medicines, walking, and lifting. Keep the incision areas clean and dry as directed. Do not judge recovery by the size of the skin openings alone; internal healing also needs time.

Warning signs after surgery

Call the surgical team for increasing pain, fever, repeated vomiting, worsening wound redness, new drainage, difficulty urinating, or bleeding that is heavier than you were told to expect. Get urgent help for sudden chest pain, severe shortness of breath, fainting, or one-sided leg swelling with pain.

Useful questions

Ask whether robotic assistance changes the planned hysterectomy, what could make another approach necessary, how the ovaries will be managed, and which symptoms require urgent review after discharge.

Questions people ask

Does a robot perform the hysterectomy by itself?

No. The surgeon controls the system and makes the operative decisions.

Is robotic surgery suitable for everyone?

No. The surgical plan depends on anatomy, the reason for surgery, previous procedures, and the surgeon’s assessment.
