Is hysterectomy done with laparoscopic surgery system?

Laparoscopic hysterectomy uses a camera and slender instruments passed through small openings in the abdomen. The surgeon views the pelvic organs on a screen while separating and removing the uterus. Depending on the operation, the uterus may leave through the vagina or through an enlarged small opening. The ovaries and fallopian tubes may or may not be removed; that is a separate decision from the choice of access.

A laparoscopic approach is not appropriate for every person. The size and position of the uterus, scar tissue from earlier operations, other pelvic conditions, and the surgeon’s assessment can affect the plan. Sometimes the operation begins with laparoscopy and changes to another approach for safety.

Before surgery, discuss why a hysterectomy is recommended, which organs are planned to remain, and whether the operation is intended to be laparoscopic. Share previous abdominal operations, medical conditions, medicines, and any possibility of pregnancy. Ask what preparation is needed, including fasting, medication changes, transport home, and the support you may need while recovering.

After the procedure, follow the discharge instructions about walking, wound care, bathing, lifting, and returning to work or exercise. Mild abdominal soreness, tiredness, or light vaginal bleeding can occur during recovery, but your team should explain what is expected for your operation.

Contact your surgical team promptly for fever, worsening pain, repeated vomiting, increasing redness or discharge from an incision, heavy vaginal bleeding, difficulty passing urine, or a swollen painful leg. Seek urgent help for chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, or sudden confusion. The discharge plan may include a dedicated number for questions after surgery.

Ask: Why is laparoscopy suitable or unsuitable for me? Which organs will be removed? Could the approach change during surgery? What symptoms should prompt a call, and when can I resume my usual activities?
