Is hip fracture surgery done with an intramedullary nail?

An intramedullary nail is a metal rod placed inside the hollow centre of a bone, usually through the upper thigh area, to stabilise certain fractures. Screws or locking parts can hold the femoral head and the main bone segments in position. This approach is often considered for fractures extending below the hip or through the upper femur. A fracture near the femoral neck may instead need screws, a partial replacement or another method. Imaging guides the choice.

Ask the surgical team what the fracture pattern shows and why a nail is being recommended. Share information about medicines, allergies and previous operations. After surgery, follow the exact weight-bearing plan, keep the wound clean and attend physiotherapy. Use crutches or a frame as demonstrated, even if the leg feels stronger before the bone is ready for more load.

Seek urgent advice for increasing wound redness or drainage, fever, severe or escalating pain, new numbness, a cold or pale foot, calf swelling, chest pain or difficulty breathing. A fall, sudden loss of the ability to bear the permitted weight, or a new clicking or deformity also needs prompt review.
