Is a growth scan done with 3D or 4D ultrasound?

A growth scan checks measurements such as the baby's head, abdomen, and thigh bone, along with estimated growth, position, amniotic fluid, and placental location. Doppler assessment may also be used when blood flow needs review. These tasks rely on clear two-dimensional measurements and do not require a three-dimensional image.

3D ultrasound creates a surface-like image, and 4D ultrasound adds movement. They can be useful for viewing selected anatomy or creating a fuller visual image, but they are not automatically part of every growth scan. The available equipment and the reason for the appointment influence the choice.

Ask the imaging centre which ultrasound method is planned and whether a 3D or 4D view would add useful information for your clinical question. Follow instructions about bladder preparation if provided, wear clothing that allows access to your abdomen, and bring earlier scan reports if requested.

During the examination, the sonographer may spend time obtaining measurements rather than producing keepsake images. A baby’s position can also limit the views available, so an extra dimension does not guarantee a clearer picture.

A scan appointment should not delay urgent advice. Contact your maternity service promptly for vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, severe abdominal pain, regular painful contractions, severe headache with visual changes, or reduced fetal movement after you have been given movement guidance. Urgency depends on symptoms, not on whether imaging is 2D, 3D, or 4D.

Ask what measurements are being checked, whether Doppler is needed, whether the scan uses 2D, 3D, or 4D imaging, and when you will receive the findings.
