Is a GP consultation needed before a second medical opinion?

Short answer

A GP consultation is not always needed before a second medical opinion, but it can help clarify the diagnosis, records and question you want reviewed.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What this means

Whether you need a referral depends on the specialist, clinic and reason for the opinion. Some services accept patients directly, while others request a referral or previous reports before arranging an assessment.

A second opinion is most useful when the reviewing clinician can see the relevant consultation notes, test results, scans, pathology reports, medicine list and treatment history. A GP may help you understand what is being asked, identify missing information and coordinate care between clinicians.

How to prepare

Ask the clinic you plan to use whether a referral is required and which documents it needs. Write down the diagnosis or proposed treatment, what concerns you, and the specific decision you want another clinician to review.

Collect reports and images through the original clinic, keep a current medicine and allergy list, and tell both clinicians about treatment already tried. Continue agreed treatment while arranging the opinion unless a qualified clinician advises a change.

When not to wait

Do not delay urgent care while arranging another opinion if you have severe breathing difficulty, new weakness on one side, sudden trouble speaking, fainting, severe chest pain, uncontrolled bleeding or rapidly worsening symptoms. Contact the treating service promptly if a new treatment reaction develops.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what diagnosis or decision is uncertain, which records should be shared, whether a referral is required, and how care will be coordinated if the opinions differ.
