Is a glucose tolerance test safe while fasting in Ramadan?

The test involves fasting beforehand, drinking a measured glucose solution, and having blood samples taken at planned times. Ramadan fasting may overlap with the test preparation or waiting period, while food and drink restrictions can make nausea, weakness, dizziness, or dehydration more difficult to manage. Breaking the fast or changing the timing can also mean the test no longer follows the required instructions.

This does not mean the test cannot be done in Ramadan. Your maternity or diabetes team may recommend a different appointment time, rescheduling, or another assessment depending on why the test was requested and how far along the pregnancy is.

Tell the booking team that you are fasting and explain whether the test is being requested during pregnancy. Ask exactly when you may eat, drink water, take medicines, and start or end the fast. Do not alter prescribed treatment or deliberately continue fasting through symptoms without a plan.

Arrange transport if you have previously felt faint during blood tests. Follow the laboratory instructions about fasting, remain seated during the waiting period, and bring a suitable meal or drink for after the test if your clinician says the fast should end.

Stop and seek medical advice promptly if you develop severe dizziness, fainting, confusion, repeated vomiting, marked weakness, or difficulty staying awake. During pregnancy, contact your maternity service urgently for heavy bleeding, severe abdominal pain, reduced fetal movement after you have been advised how to monitor it, or any symptom that feels serious. The need for urgent care is based on symptoms, not on whether the test is common.

Ask whether the test should be completed now or after Ramadan, whether water is allowed, what to do with regular medicines, and what symptoms should make you break the fast and call the team.
