Gestational diabetes develops when pregnancy-related changes make it harder for the body to keep blood glucose in range. It may cause no noticeable symptoms, so a person can feel well while readings are above the target set by the maternity team. Ongoing high glucose can influence fetal growth, the amount of amniotic fluid, delivery planning, and newborn glucose after birth. Follow the monitoring plan and record readings, meals, activity, and prescribed medicines when requested. Choose regular balanced meals, include fibre and protein, and follow advice about safe activity in pregnancy. Attend antenatal appointments so the team can review growth and treatment. Do not change insulin or other glucose-lowering medicine without guidance, and keep a plan for meals and medication when routines change.

Contact your maternity team promptly for repeated readings outside your agreed range, vomiting that prevents fluids or medicines, reduced fetal movement, vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, severe headache, vision changes, or sudden swelling. Seek emergency help for fainting, confusion, severe breathing difficulty, or severe abdominal pain.
