Is gait analysis done with 3D motion capture?

Short answer
Gait analysis can be done with 3D motion capture to measure joint and body movement during walking or running.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- What it records
- Three-dimensional movement of selected body segments during steps.
- How it is used
- Findings are combined with symptoms and physical assessment.
What the assessment measures
During a 3D motion-capture assessment, reflective markers or sensors may be placed on selected body landmarks while cameras record movement. Software uses these recordings to describe how the pelvis, hips, knees, ankles, and feet move through each step. A clinician may combine this information with walking observation, strength testing, footwear review, and sometimes force or pressure measurements. The result is a movement picture that can help identify patterns linked with pain, injury, weakness, or a change in running technique; it is interpreted alongside your symptoms rather than used alone.
How to prepare
Wear clothing that allows the body landmarks and joints to be seen, and bring the shoes you normally use for the activity being assessed. Tell the clinician about pain, previous injuries, braces, orthotics, and the distance or speed that brings on symptoms. You may be asked to walk or run repeatedly at a comfortable pace. The assessment should reproduce useful movement without pushing through sharp pain.
When to seek care
Stop the assessment and tell the clinician if you develop sharp pain, sudden weakness, dizziness, chest discomfort, or unusual shortness of breath. Arrange a clinical review for new difficulty walking, repeated falls, numbness, or pain that persists after activity. A movement report does not replace assessment of a sudden injury.
Questions for your doctor
What movement question are you trying to answer with 3D capture? Will the assessment include walking, running, or both? How will the findings change my exercises, footwear, training load, or further evaluation?

Questions people ask
Do I need to run during gait analysis?
Not always. The activity is selected according to your symptoms and the question being assessed; it may involve walking, running, or both.
Does 3D capture diagnose the cause by itself?
No. It supplies movement information, which a clinician interprets with your history, examination, and other relevant findings.
