Is fracture fixation surgery done with a plate and screws?

A plate is shaped to fit along the outside of a bone. Screws pass through openings in the plate and anchor into the bone, helping maintain alignment and stability. The surgeon may first reposition the fragments and then select a plate designed for the fracture’s location and forces. This method can be considered for fractures near a joint or for patterns that need controlled support, although a different device may be more appropriate in another case. Hardware is usually left in place unless it causes a specific problem or removal is advised.

Ask how the plate will support your fracture and whether the nearby joint needs early movement. Follow instructions about splints, lifting, walking, and using crutches. Keep the incision protected, watch for skin changes, and attend imaging appointments so the clinician can assess alignment and healing. Rehabilitation commonly builds movement and strength in stages rather than forcing the injured area before it is ready.

Call the care team about spreading redness, wound drainage, fever, pain that is worsening, or new tingling and weakness. Seek urgent assessment if the hand or foot becomes cold, pale, blue, or severely swollen, or if you develop sudden chest pain or difficulty breathing.
