Is endoscopic spine surgery done with a spinal endoscope?

A spinal endoscope contains a camera and light. It sends a magnified view to a monitor, helping the surgeon identify the intended area and guide instruments. The access route and instrument size vary with the spinal level, the target problem and the technique being used.

The endoscope is a viewing and working system, not a treatment by itself. The surgeon may use instruments through or alongside the access channel to remove selected disc material, relieve pressure or address another suitable problem. Endoscopic surgery is not appropriate for every spinal condition, and the decision depends on examination and imaging.

Before surgery, ask what structure is being treated, how the endoscope will reach it, what anaesthesia is planned and whether an alternative approach would be more suitable. Share changes in leg or arm strength, sensation, walking, bladder or bowel control, and all medicines.

Afterward, follow wound, activity and lifting instructions. Keep the incision protected, increase walking or exercises only as directed and attend follow-up. Report new symptoms rather than assuming they are part of normal recovery.

Seek urgent medical attention for new or worsening limb weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the saddle area, severe unrelenting pain, or difficulty walking. Contact the surgical team for fever, wound drainage, spreading redness, increasing swelling or a severe new headache after the procedure.

Ask what the endoscope will visualise, which instruments will be used, why this route fits your condition, what symptoms should improve, what restrictions apply and which warning signs need urgent assessment.
