Is endometriosis safe in teenagers?

Endometriosis is tissue similar to the uterine lining growing outside the uterus. It may cause painful periods, pelvic pain between periods, pain with bowel movements or urination during a period, heavy bleeding, tiredness, or symptoms that lead to missed school and activities. A teenager’s symptoms are real even when an examination appears normal. Early assessment can help control pain and plan follow-up.

Keep a diary of pain, bleeding, bowel or bladder symptoms, medicines used, and missed activities. Arrange an appointment with a clinician experienced in adolescent or gynaecological care. Evaluation may include a discussion, examination when appropriate, and imaging; a normal scan does not always explain persistent symptoms. Treatment can include pain relief, hormonal options, physical strategies, and review over time.

Seek urgent care for sudden severe pelvic pain, fainting, repeated vomiting, fever, or very heavy bleeding with weakness or dizziness. Arrange timely medical review when period pain repeatedly stops school, sleep, sport, or social activities; when pain is worsening; or when prescribed treatment is not helping. A trusted adult can help a teenager describe symptoms and attend appointments.
