Is emollient therapy done with urea cream?

Emollient therapy means applying products that support the skin barrier and reduce water loss. Urea is a humectant that helps attract water into the outer skin. It can also loosen built-up scale, so it may be useful when skin is rough, thickened or very dry. The right formulation depends on the body area and whether the skin is intact, cracked or inflamed.

Urea cream is not interchangeable with every moisturiser. Stronger preparations may sting on fissured skin, around the eyes or on other sensitive areas. A clinician may suggest a different emollient, or use urea alongside another treatment, if irritation or active inflammation is present.
