Is elbow replacement done with a titanium implant?

An elbow replacement has parts that replace damaged joint surfaces and recreate a hinge. Depending on the design, components can include metal parts and a durable bearing material; not every component is made from titanium. The exact combination depends on bone quality, ligament stability, the extent of damage and whether the operation is a first replacement or revision.

Titanium is valued in orthopaedic implants for its strength and compatibility with the body, but the presence of titanium does not determine whether an operation is suitable. The surgeon also considers fixation, movement, expected loading and protection of the surrounding soft tissues.

Ask the surgeon which components are planned, how they will be fixed, what bearing material is used and why that design fits your elbow. Share previous reactions to implants, metal sensitivity concerns, infection history, fractures and medicines that affect healing.

Recovery commonly includes a protected period followed by carefully progressed movement. Follow restrictions on lifting and pushing, use the prescribed support and attend rehabilitation. Elbow replacement is designed for function, but it requires respect for the healing tissues and the implant's loading limits.

After replacement, seek prompt advice for increasing wound redness, drainage, fever, worsening pain, new instability, or a sudden change in elbow movement. Urgent assessment is needed for a cold or discoloured hand, new severe numbness or weakness, or an injury that causes sudden deformity.

Ask whether titanium is part of your planned implant, what other materials are present, how the components are fixed, which movements and loads are restricted, and how rehabilitation will protect the new joint.
