Is elbow arthroscopy done with an arthroscope?

An arthroscope has a light and camera at its tip. The image is shown on a monitor so the surgeon can inspect parts of the elbow, such as the joint surfaces, lining and nearby structures. Other instruments can pass through separate small openings to remove loose tissue, treat selected cartilage problems or address stiffness, depending on the diagnosis.

The camera does not mean that every elbow problem can be treated this way. The surgeon chooses arthroscopy after considering symptoms, examination findings, imaging, previous treatment and the risks around the elbow, including nerves and blood vessels.

Ask what problem the procedure is intended to address, which part of the elbow will be examined and whether treatment may be performed during the same operation. Discuss medicines, allergies, previous operations and any numbness or tingling in the hand before anaesthesia.

Afterward, keep dressings and any splint as instructed. Elevate the arm if advised, move the fingers regularly when permitted and attend follow-up or physiotherapy appointments. Do not use the elbow for lifting until the surgical team gives a clear progression.

Contact the surgical team promptly for increasing pain or swelling, spreading redness, drainage, fever, a dressing that becomes soaked, or new weakness or numbness in the hand. Urgent assessment is needed if the hand becomes cold, pale or blue, or if finger movement suddenly becomes difficult.

Ask what the arthroscope is expected to show, which treatment may be done through the other portals, how nearby nerves will be protected, when elbow movement begins and which changes require urgent review.
