Is ear wax removal done with an ear microsuction device?

Microsuction uses a small suction tip while the ear canal is viewed with magnification or a lighted instrument. The clinician guides the tip around the wax rather than pushing it deeper. Depending on the wax, the ear may first be softened with drops. Other approaches, such as an instrument used to lift wax, may be more appropriate in some ears.

You may hear a strong rushing or buzzing sound during microsuction. Brief sensitivity, coughing or mild dizziness can occur because the ear canal is close to structures involved in balance and reflexes. Tell the clinician if you have had ear surgery, a perforated eardrum, severe pain or discharge.

Follow any instructions about softening drops before the appointment. Do not put cotton buds, hairpins or other objects into the canal, because they can push wax inward or injure the skin. During removal, keep still and report sharp pain, distress or sudden hearing change. Afterward, follow advice about keeping the ear dry and using drops. Hearing often improves when the blockage has been cleared, but persistent symptoms need reassessment.

Arrange medical review for severe ear pain, fluid or blood from the ear, fever, marked swelling, sudden hearing loss or significant dizziness. Do not arrange routine wax removal when you suspect an eardrum problem without first asking a clinician. If discomfort or reduced hearing continues after removal, the symptom may have another cause and should be checked.
