Is Dupuytren's contracture safe in people with diabetes?

Diabetes does not make every treatment unsuitable. It can, however, affect wound healing, infection risk, sensation in the hand and the way a person responds to illness. Dupuytren's contracture causes thickened tissue in the palm that can pull one or more fingers towards the palm. The condition itself is associated with diabetes, but having diabetes does not by itself show how advanced the hand problem is.

A clinician may examine finger movement, grip, skin, pulses and sensation before recommending observation, an injection, a needle procedure or surgery. Medicines, glucose management and other health conditions also matter when sedation or an operation is being considered.

Tell the hand specialist about diabetes medicines, recent glucose concerns, reduced feeling, previous hand infections and any difficulty healing cuts. Do not stop prescribed medicines unless the treating team gives you a specific plan. Keep the palm clean, protect it from burns and cuts, and follow the agreed exercises or splint instructions after treatment.

If surgery is recommended, ask how the incision will be protected, how glucose will be managed around the procedure and which symptoms should prompt a call. A hand therapist can help preserve movement and adapt exercises if sensation or strength is reduced.

Arrange medical review if the finger is becoming harder to straighten, the palm develops a painful lump, or hand function is interfering with dressing, washing or work. Seek prompt care for spreading redness, warmth, drainage, fever, rapidly increasing swelling, a dark or pale finger, or a sudden loss of feeling or movement, especially after a procedure.
