Is a diabetic foot ulcer safe in people with diabetes?

A foot ulcer is an open area or break in the skin. Diabetes can reduce sensation, so a person may not feel pressure, heat or a minor injury clearly. Changes in circulation and slower healing can allow a small wound to become deeper or infected. The condition itself is the concern; it is not a sign that every foot problem has the same cause.

Assessment checks the wound, nearby skin, blood flow, sensation and signs of infection. Pressure from footwear or walking may need to be reduced while the area heals.

Arrange a same-day or prompt review with your diabetes or foot-care team. Keep the area clean and covered with a suitable dressing recommended by a clinician. Avoid walking barefoot, picking at the wound, cutting surrounding skin or using non-prescribed chemicals and home remedies. Check both feet daily with a mirror if needed, and use well-fitting footwear that does not rub. Follow instructions about dressings, pressure relief and glucose management.

Seek urgent help if redness spreads, the foot becomes hot or swollen, pain increases, discharge or a bad smell appears, the skin turns dark, or you develop fever, chills or feel suddenly unwell. Immediate assessment is also needed if the wound is deep, bleeding will not stop, or you can see exposed tissue. Do not wait for a routine diabetes appointment when these changes occur.

Ask how deep the ulcer is, how to dress it, whether walking or work needs to be limited, and which symptoms mean you should return urgently. Also ask who will review healing, how often the dressing should change, and whether your footwear or glucose plan needs adjustment.
