Is diabetes screening needed before a diabetes education programme?

A diabetes education programme teaches practical skills such as understanding glucose readings, planning meals, moving safely, taking medicines and recognising warning signs. Screening may involve a blood test or other checks used to identify diabetes or a raised risk. Education does not have to wait in every situation: a clinician may invite you to learn general self-management skills while testing is pending, or arrange education after a diagnosis has been confirmed.

The programme may be tailored differently for someone with established diabetes, someone with prediabetes, and someone who is being assessed because of symptoms or family history. Screening results can also help the team decide which topics need more attention.

Ask the service offering the programme whether a referral, recent test result or confirmed diagnosis is needed. Take a list of medicines, relevant glucose readings and questions about food, activity or treatment. If testing has been requested, attend it as advised and continue prescribed medicines unless your clinician gives different instructions. Do not change medication or restrict food before a test without specific guidance.

Seek urgent medical help for severe thirst with repeated urination and worsening weakness, vomiting, abdominal pain, unusual sleepiness, confusion or difficult breathing. These symptoms can signal a serious glucose problem and need assessment rather than waiting for an education session. Contact your clinical team soon if you have new blurred vision, unexplained weight change, recurrent infections or a wound that is slow to heal.
