Is dermoscopy done with a dermatoscope?

A dermatoscope is a handheld examination device with magnification and a light source. The clinician may place it directly on the skin with a contact medium, or use a non-contact setting, depending on the device and lesion. This view can reveal colour patterns and structures beneath the surface that are difficult to judge by eye alone. Dermoscopy may support assessment of moles, pigmented lesions, and other skin marks.

Usually, you can attend with clean skin and tell the clinician which lesion has changed or worries you. Mention previous skin cancer, family history, recent injury, bleeding, itching, or a new mark. Bring earlier photographs if the lesion has been monitored. The examination does not remove the lesion; if the findings need confirmation, the clinician may discuss monitoring, another review, or sampling the skin.

Arrange a skin assessment for a new or changing mark, especially one that grows, develops uneven colour or shape, bleeds, crusts, or remains itchy or painful. Dermoscopy can help a clinician decide what should happen next, but a concerning lesion should not be ignored because an examination device alone cannot replace clinical judgement or a biopsy when one is needed.
