Is dementia safe in older adults?

Short answer
Dementia is not simply a safe part of ageing; it can affect judgment and daily function, so assessment and a tailored safety plan are needed.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- May affect

- Sudden change
- Needs urgent assessment rather than being attributed automatically to dementia
What dementia can change
Dementia may affect memory, language, orientation, problem-solving, mood, and the ability to manage medicines or finances. Changes can increase the risk of falls, leaving home unsafely, missed meals, driving problems, or household hazards. Symptoms that appear suddenly are different: abrupt confusion can signal infection, medication effects, stroke, or another urgent problem and should not be assumed to be dementia.
Support safe daily living
Arrange a clinical assessment and review medicines, vision, hearing, sleep, and other health conditions. Keep routines predictable, improve lighting, reduce trip hazards, label important items, and store medicines and dangerous substances securely. Discuss consent, emergency contacts, driving, wandering risk, and future care preferences while the person can participate. Use calm, simple explanations and preserve independence in tasks that remain safe.
When urgent help is needed
Seek urgent care for sudden confusion, new weakness, facial drooping, speech trouble, a severe headache, a fall with injury, loss of consciousness, or inability to stay awake. Contact the healthcare team promptly for rapid decline, repeated falls, missed medicines, unsafe wandering, aggression, or trouble eating and drinking.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what assessment is needed, which reversible problems should be checked, how to review medicines, and what support can make bathing, cooking, walking, and medication routines safer.
