Is custom orthotics done with 3d foot scanner?

A 3D foot scanner records the contours of the foot and can create a digital model for planning an orthotic. The clinician may scan the foot while standing, sitting, or in another position, depending on the purpose of the device. A scan shows shape, but it does not by itself explain pain, muscle control, joint movement, footwear needs, or walking pattern. The assessment may therefore include questions about symptoms, examination of the legs and feet, and observation of movement before the design is finalised.

Bring the shoes you use most often, especially if the orthotic is intended for work, sport, or daily walking. Tell the clinician where discomfort occurs, what activities aggravate it, and whether you have used insoles before. During fitting, the device should sit securely in the shoe without creating pressure points. Use it according to the recommended break-in plan and report rubbing, blistering, numbness, or a clear change in walking.

Arrange a review if the orthotic causes persistent rubbing, worsening pain, new numbness, or difficulty balancing. A hot, swollen, or wounded area of skin deserves attention, particularly if you have reduced sensation. Seek prompt medical care for sudden inability to bear weight, marked weakness, or a rapidly worsening foot problem rather than continuing to adjust to the device.

Ask what the scan will measure, whether your feet will be assessed under load, and how the digital model will guide the design. Clarify which shoes are suitable, how gradually to use the orthotic, when a fit check is due, and what signs mean it needs adjustment.
