Is CT scan done with imaging contrast agent?

A CT scan creates detailed cross-sectional images using X-rays. An imaging contrast agent can make certain blood vessels, organs or areas of abnormal tissue easier to distinguish. It may be swallowed, injected into a vein, or used in another way depending on the body part being examined. The scan protocol is chosen to answer the specific clinical question.

Contrast is not suitable or necessary for every scan. Before an injected agent is used, the imaging team may ask about previous reactions, kidney problems, asthma, allergies, pregnancy and medicines. A brief warm feeling or unusual taste can occur after some injections and usually passes, but tell staff about any symptoms during the appointment.

Follow the appointment instructions about eating, drinking and medicines. Tell the radiology team about pregnancy or possible pregnancy, kidney disease, diabetes, thyroid problems and any earlier reaction to contrast. Bring details of medicines and relevant medical records. If you are unsure whether your scan includes contrast, check with the imaging centre before arriving rather than changing medicines on your own.

During or soon after contrast administration, tell staff immediately about hives, facial or throat swelling, wheezing, severe dizziness or difficulty breathing. After leaving, seek urgent help for worsening breathing difficulty, fainting or swelling of the mouth or throat. Contact the imaging centre for persistent vomiting, a spreading rash or other symptoms that concern you.

Ask whether your scan needs contrast, how it will be given, whether fasting is required, and what alternatives exist if contrast is unsuitable. Confirm whether kidney tests or medicine instructions apply, when results will be available, and whom to contact after the scan.
