Is cryotherapy for lesion removal done with liquid nitrogen?

Liquid nitrogen is extremely cold and is applied with an appropriate clinical applicator. The cold damages targeted superficial tissue, which then separates or heals as the skin repairs itself. The clinician chooses the application method and duration according to the lesion and its position.

Immediately afterwards, the area may be pale, sore or swollen. A blister or crust can develop and later shed. The response is local, but healing can look different on different parts of the body. A lesion that has not been diagnosed should be assessed before it is frozen.

Tell the clinician if you have reduced sensation, circulation concerns, a history of unusual scarring, poor healing or medicines that affect bleeding. Follow the dressing and washing instructions after treatment. Keep the area protected from friction, avoid picking the blister or crust, and use recommended sun protection once the skin can tolerate it.

Do not apply liquid nitrogen yourself. Home freezing products are not interchangeable with a clinician's assessment, especially for a pigmented, bleeding, painful or changing lesion. A review may be advised if the spot needs monitoring or further treatment.

Call the clinic if the treated area develops spreading redness, increasing warmth, pus, worsening pain or bleeding that does not settle with gentle pressure. Seek prompt care for fever, marked swelling or a rapidly changing wound. Get urgent advice if treatment near the eye affects vision or causes severe swelling.

Ask whether liquid nitrogen is appropriate for the diagnosis, how it will be applied, how long healing may take and whether pigment or texture may change. Ask for clear wound-care instructions and the signs of infection to watch for.
