Is cortisone injection done with local anaesthetic?

A local anaesthetic temporarily numbs sensation in the area. A corticosteroid, often called cortisone in everyday conversation, is used to calm inflammation over a longer period. A clinician may combine them so the area is more comfortable during or shortly after the procedure, or use the anaesthetic response as part of the clinical assessment. Some injections use corticosteroid without local anaesthetic. The choice depends on the tissue being treated, the medicine available, and your medical history.

Before treatment, mention allergies to medicines, diabetes, blood-thinning treatment, an active infection, and any earlier problem with local anaesthetic or steroid injections. Ask what medicines will be used and whether numbness could affect walking or driving immediately afterward. Protect the area while it feels numb, because reduced sensation can make it easier to miss heat, pressure, or an accidental knock. Follow the clinician’s instructions for activity and review.

Get medical advice if numbness lasts longer than the clinician expects, or if worsening pain, increasing swelling, redness, warmth, or drainage develops at the injection site. Fever or feeling distinctly unwell requires prompt assessment. Emergency help is needed for breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips or face, collapse, or a widespread allergic rash. Sudden weakness or persistent loss of sensation should also be assessed urgently.

Ask whether local anaesthetic is planned, how long numbness may last, and whether you should arrange transport. Clarify which symptoms are expected, how to protect the area while numb, when to resume exercise, and when the result of the corticosteroid should be reviewed.
