Is closed reduction done with C-arm fluoroscopy?

Closed reduction means the clinician manipulates a dislocated joint or broken bone back toward its proper position through the skin. A mobile C-arm can send X-ray images to a monitor during the manoeuvre. This allows the team to assess alignment before, during and after the reduction, then apply a splint, cast or other support when appropriate.

The C-arm is an imaging aid, not the treatment itself. Whether it is needed depends on the injured area, the complexity of the displacement, available equipment and the clinician’s plan. Some reductions are assessed with standard X-rays before and after the procedure.

Tell the emergency or orthopaedic team about pregnancy possibility, allergies, medicines and the time you last ate, because sedation or anaesthesia may be considered. Keep the injured limb supported and avoid trying to straighten it yourself. After reduction, follow instructions about elevation, splint care and movement of the fingers or toes.

Get urgent help for a cold, pale, blue or numb hand or foot; increasing pain or tight swelling beneath a cast or splint; inability to move the fingers or toes; uncontrolled bleeding; or severe pain after the limb was repositioned. These changes can signal impaired circulation, nerve pressure or a problem with the reduction.
