Is child health consultation done with an otoscope?

An otoscope is a handheld instrument with a light and viewing tip. The clinician uses it to look into the ear canal and examine the eardrum for changes such as redness, fluid, swelling, or a blocked view from wax. The examination can help when a child has ear pain, reduced hearing, fever, discharge, or a recent cold.

A child health consultation is broader than an ear examination. Depending on the reason for the visit, the clinician may review growth, development, feeding, sleep, immunisations, breathing, skin, and general wellbeing. An otoscope is used when it can answer a relevant clinical question.

Bring a list of symptoms, their timing, and any medicines given. Tell the clinician if the child has had ear surgery, tubes, hearing concerns, or difficulty tolerating previous examinations. A calm explanation and a familiar comfort object can help; the clinician may examine the ears while the child sits with a parent or carer.

Do not put cotton buds, drops, or other objects into the ear unless a healthcare professional has advised them. Ear wax can hide the eardrum, so the clinician will decide whether it should be managed and how.

Arrange prompt medical review for severe ear pain, swelling behind the ear, new hearing loss, blood or pus from the ear, or a child who seems unusually unwell. Seek urgent help if the child is difficult to wake, has breathing difficulty, or has a severe allergic reaction. An otoscope examination should not delay emergency care.

Ask whether the ears need examination, what the clinician can see, and whether wax or movement made the view incomplete. Ask what symptoms should trigger reassessment, whether hearing needs checking, and how the ear findings fit with the child's wider health review.
