Is chemotherapy safe in older adults?

Age alone does not decide whether chemotherapy is appropriate. The team may review strength, mobility, memory, nutrition, kidney and liver function, heart health, other conditions, medicines, and support at home. This helps predict practical challenges and identify ways to reduce or manage side effects.

Possible effects include tiredness, nausea, infection risk, appetite changes, nerve symptoms, and changes in blood counts. A treatment plan can sometimes use dose changes, schedule changes, supportive medicines, or extra monitoring. The aim is to balance cancer control with the life you want to maintain.

Give the team a complete list of prescription medicines, over-the-counter products, and supplements. Mention falls, hearing or vision problems, memory changes, dental issues, and difficulty managing daily tasks. Arrange help with transport, meals, and appointments if needed. Ask for a written plan covering medicines and side effects.

Contact the oncology team urgently for fever, chills, new confusion, severe weakness, repeated vomiting, inability to drink, unusual bleeding, or a fall with injury. Emergency help is needed for chest pain, severe breathlessness, collapse, or sudden one-sided weakness.
