Is cervical screening test safe for women who prefer a female clinician?

During screening, a speculum gently holds the vaginal walls apart while a small tool collects cells from the cervix. Pressure, brief discomfort or light spotting may happen. You can ask the clinician to explain each step, pause, use a smaller speculum when suitable, or stop if you are distressed.

Your preference for a female clinician is reasonable to discuss before the appointment. It can help to mention privacy, language, cultural or trauma-related needs when booking so the clinic can plan the visit and tell you what alternatives are available.

Ask whether a female clinician is available and whether a support person or interpreter can attend. At the start, confirm consent and agree on a signal to pause. Tell the clinician about pregnancy, pelvic pain, unusual bleeding, infections or previous difficult examinations.

Contact a clinician if bleeding is heavy or persistent, or if you develop severe pelvic pain, fever, faintness or unusual discharge after screening. Symptoms such as bleeding after sex or between periods need assessment even if a recent screening test was normal.
