Is cervical fusion done with plate and screws?

In an anterior cervical fusion, the surgeon works from the front of the neck and places a spacer or bone graft where a disc or damaged bone was removed. A plate fixed with screws can bridge the neighbouring vertebrae and help keep the reconstruction aligned while fusion develops. Some operations use different implants, such as a stand-alone device or hardware placed from the back, so a plate is not required in every case.

The metal does not fuse the bones by itself. Its purpose is to provide stability and help maintain the intended position during healing. Your surgeon chooses the design according to the level treated, bone quality, anatomy and operative plan.

Ask which surgical approach is planned and whether the proposed construct includes a plate, screws, a spacer or another implant. Confirm how the hardware will be checked after surgery and which neck movements, lifting limits or wound-care instructions apply during recovery. Do not change medicines or activity restrictions without the operating team’s advice.
