Is breast MRI done with an MRI scanner?

The scanner uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to produce detailed images. During breast MRI, the breasts are positioned in openings in a platform so the images can be focused on breast tissue. The platform moves into the scanner, which is shaped like a short tunnel. You need to remain still while the images are collected, and the machine makes loud tapping or knocking sounds.

A contrast medicine may be given through a vein when the radiology team needs it to show certain areas more clearly. Breast MRI does not use x-rays, but metal, some implants, kidney problems, or pregnancy can affect whether contrast or the examination is appropriate.

Tell the imaging team about implanted devices, metal fragments, kidney disease, allergies, and possible pregnancy before the scan. Follow instructions about food, drink, and medicines. Wear clothing without metal and leave jewellery outside the scan room.
