Is a BRCA gene mutation safe in women?

BRCA1 and BRCA2 are involved in repairing DNA damage. A harmful inherited variant can increase the chance of breast, ovarian, fallopian tube and primary peritoneal cancers, with other risks depending on the gene and family history. A positive result does not mean cancer is present, and a negative result may not explain every family cancer pattern.

Some reports identify a variant whose meaning is still uncertain. That finding is handled differently from a confirmed harmful variant, so the exact laboratory wording matters.

Review the report with a genetics professional and a clinician who can tailor surveillance to your age, previous results, reproductive plans and relatives' history. Discussions may include breast imaging, ovarian-risk management and options that reduce risk. Do not change medicines, screening or plans for surgery without a qualified review.

Arrange medical assessment for a new breast lump, skin or nipple change, unusual discharge, persistent pelvic or abdominal swelling, ongoing pelvic pain, or unexplained changes in bowel or bladder habits. These symptoms can have non-cancer causes, but timely assessment is appropriate. Seek urgent care for severe pain, heavy bleeding, fainting or breathing difficulty.
