Is biopsy done with immunohistochemistry?

A biopsy removes a small piece of tissue for examination. Immunohistochemistry is a laboratory test that may be carried out on that tissue after it has been prepared. Special antibodies attach to selected proteins, creating a stain that can be viewed by a pathologist.

The pattern of staining can help distinguish tumour types and show whether particular markers are present. It may support diagnosis, classification, or selection of a treatment. It is not automatically needed for every biopsy, and the number of markers tested depends on the tissue and the clinical question.

Ask whether the sample will be sent for additional laboratory testing and when the pathology report may be ready. Follow the wound-care instructions after the biopsy and report increasing redness, swelling, drainage, fever, or bleeding. Keep your follow-up appointment so the result can be explained alongside scans, examination, and other laboratory findings.

If the sample is small or the result is unclear, your team may discuss another sample or a different test. This does not by itself confirm or exclude cancer; interpretation depends on the whole clinical picture.

Seek prompt medical advice after a biopsy for bleeding that does not settle with firm pressure, rapidly worsening pain, fever, spreading redness, pus, or difficulty breathing. Contact the team if you are unsure how to care for the biopsy site or if a dressing becomes soaked.
