Is biomechanical assessment done with 3D motion capture?

Short answer
Biomechanical assessment can include 3D motion capture, although many assessments also combine observation, physical examination, and other movement measurements.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- History, physical examination, and functional testing
What the assessment shows
A 3D motion-capture system uses cameras and markers, or markerless tracking, to record how body segments move through space. Software can help a clinician review joint angles, timing, symmetry, and movement patterns during tasks such as walking, squatting, running, or landing.
The technology is one part of the assessment. Your history, symptoms, strength, flexibility, balance, joint examination, footwear, and goals add context that an image or movement trace cannot provide on its own. The findings are used to guide exercise selection, technique changes, or further evaluation.
How to prepare
Wear comfortable clothing that allows the relevant joints to be seen or tracked, and bring suitable shoes if the assessment concerns running or sport. Tell the clinician about pain, previous injuries, training changes, and the exact activity that causes difficulty.
During testing, follow the instructions and report pain rather than pushing through it. Ask which movement is being measured, what the result may change in your plan, and whether a simpler assessment would answer the same question. Read more about 3D motion capture and how the technology is used.
When to seek care
Book a clinical assessment when pain, repeated giving-way, weakness, altered walking, or reduced function is interfering with work, exercise, or daily tasks. Motion capture may be useful, but it is not required for every concern.
Seek prompt care for sudden severe pain, a visible deformity, new numbness or weakness, or inability to bear weight after an injury. These signs need a timely examination rather than a technology-only screening.
Questions to ask
Ask: What movement are we trying to understand? Will the capture be marker-based or markerless? How will symptoms and physical findings be combined with the recording? What treatment decision will the result inform?

Questions people ask
Is 3D motion capture needed for every biomechanical assessment?
No. The clinician may answer the clinical question with observation, examination, strength testing, or simpler movement measurements.
Does motion capture diagnose the cause by itself?
No. It records movement features; interpretation alongside symptoms and examination is needed to decide what they mean.
