Is benign prostatic hyperplasia safe in older adults?

Benign prostatic hyperplasia, also called an enlarged prostate or BPH, is a non-cancerous increase in prostate tissue. Because the prostate surrounds part of the urine channel, enlargement can make the stream weaker, cause hesitancy, increase daytime or night-time urination, or leave a feeling of incomplete emptying. The condition itself is not prostate cancer, but similar urinary changes can have other causes, so an assessment helps clarify what is happening.

Older adults may also take several medicines or have kidney, bladder, heart, or mobility problems that affect treatment choices. Some medicines can cause dizziness or changes in blood pressure, while others may affect bladder emptying.
