Is anomaly scan done with 3d/4d ultrasound?

The anomaly scan is a detailed pregnancy ultrasound that checks the baby’s anatomy, growth, position, placenta, and surrounding fluid. The clinician captures and measures views needed for the medical assessment. Two-dimensional imaging provides the main information used for this examination.

3D ultrasound creates a more lifelike surface image, while 4D ultrasound shows movement in real time. These views can help demonstrate certain structures or give parents an additional way to see the baby, but image quality depends on the baby’s position, movement, fluid, and other factors. A clear 3D picture is not a substitute for the full scan.

Follow the instructions from the imaging unit about meals, bladder filling, timing, and what to bring. Wear clothing that allows the abdomen to be examined comfortably. During the appointment, ask which parts of the anatomy are being checked and whether an additional view is clinically useful.

If the sonographer cannot obtain every view because of position or movement, they may ask you to walk, change position, or return for more images. This does not by itself mean there is a problem. Your maternity team will explain any finding that needs follow-up.

The scan itself is usually scheduled as part of routine pregnancy care, but contact your maternity team promptly for vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, severe abdominal pain, regular painful contractions, or reduced fetal movement when you have been told to monitor it. These symptoms are assessed separately from the ultrasound appointment.
