Is ankle arthroscopy done with an arthroscope?

The arthroscope has a light and camera connected to a viewing system. The surgeon places it through a small opening near the ankle, while fluid helps clear the view and gently expands the working space. Other small instruments can enter through separate openings to remove loose tissue, smooth damaged areas, treat some cartilage problems, or address selected sources of pain.

Before the procedure, discuss the reason for arthroscopy, anaesthesia, medicines, weight-bearing limits, and whether another treatment may be more suitable. Afterward, follow instructions for wound care, elevation, exercises, footwear, and crutches if prescribed. Swelling and stiffness can affect walking for a while, so increase activity in stages rather than testing the ankle with demanding exercise early.

Contact the surgical team if pain or swelling is worsening rather than settling, the dressing becomes soaked, or the wound develops spreading redness or discharge. Seek urgent help for chest pain, trouble breathing, a very painful swollen calf, loss of feeling, or a foot that becomes cold or pale.

Ask what the arthroscope is expected to diagnose or treat, where the small openings will be, and whether cartilage or ligament findings could change the operation. Confirm weight-bearing guidance, driving restrictions, physiotherapy timing, and signs that require a review.
