Is chemotherapy after surgery needed before survivorship care plan?

Adjuvant chemotherapy is drug treatment given after an operation to address cancer cells that may remain beyond the area removed. Whether it is advised depends on the cancer type, stage, pathology features, lymph-node findings, previous treatment, and overall health. Some people do not need it; others may be advised to have it to reduce the chance of the cancer returning.

A survivorship care plan records completed treatment, follow-up visits, possible late effects, screening needs, and who coordinates ongoing care. It is a planning document, not necessarily a signal that every active treatment has ended. The oncology team may begin it while treatment decisions are still being completed.

Ask the surgeon and oncologist to explain the pathology findings and the purpose, timing, and expected monitoring of any chemotherapy after surgery. Request a written follow-up plan that includes wound recovery, tests, symptoms to report, rehabilitation, emotional support, and the clinician responsible for each part of care.

After surgery, seek prompt advice for fever, worsening redness or drainage, uncontrolled pain, new swelling, breathing difficulty, or inability to keep fluids down. During chemotherapy, report fever, chills, bleeding, severe diarrhoea, vomiting, or a sudden change in condition using the urgent contact route supplied by the oncology team.
