Is acne safe in teenagers?

Acne develops when hair follicles become blocked by oil and shed skin cells, then become inflamed. It can appear as blackheads, whiteheads, red bumps, pus-filled spots, or deeper tender lumps on the face, chest, shoulders, or back. Hormonal changes during puberty can increase oil production. A pharmacist or dermatologist can recommend suitable treatments, which may include topical ingredients used consistently for several weeks. Keep hair products away from the face and change sweaty clothing promptly. Treatment should match the teenager’s skin sensitivity, acne type, and any medicines already being used.

Arrange a dermatology review for deep painful lumps, rapidly worsening acne, scars, widespread involvement, or breakouts that do not improve with a careful routine. Seek prompt support if acne is causing withdrawal, persistent sadness, shame, or thoughts of self-harm; emotional symptoms need direct attention. Sudden acne-like eruptions after a new medicine, with fever or facial swelling, require urgent medical advice. A clinician can distinguish acne from other follicle or skin conditions and reduce the chance of lasting marks.

Ask which type of acne is present, how long a recommended treatment should be tried, and what irritation is expected.
