Is ACL reconstruction done with an arthroscope?

An arthroscope is a slender camera that enters the knee through a small opening and sends images to a monitor. The surgeon can inspect the ACL area and assess related structures, including the meniscus and cartilage, using instruments through other openings. Reconstruction involves preparing the ligament attachment sites, passing a selected graft, and securing it so the knee can heal in a stable position. The camera helps visualise the joint, but it does not perform the whole operation by itself. Ask which graft is planned, whether meniscus or cartilage work may be needed, and how the operation affects weight-bearing and knee movement afterward. Arrange help for the early recovery period and learn how to use any prescribed brace or crutches. Rehabilitation usually begins with swelling control, restoring extension, activating the thigh muscles, and gradually rebuilding strength and balance. The surgical approach does not remove the need for this rehabilitation.

Contact the surgical team for worsening wound redness, drainage, fever, uncontrolled pain, or a sudden loss of knee movement. New calf swelling, chest pain, or breathlessness needs urgent medical attention. A locking sensation or repeated giving way before surgery should also be assessed rather than pushed through during exercise.

Ask what the arthroscope will be used to inspect, which graft and fixation method are planned, whether another knee injury may be treated at the same time, and what movement and loading limits apply during each rehabilitation stage.
