Acanthosis nigricans causes darker, thicker, velvety skin, often in the neck, underarms, groin, or other folds. In someone with diabetes, it can occur alongside insulin resistance, but the appearance alone cannot show how well diabetes is controlled. Similar darkening may have other causes, and irritation or aggressive scrubbing can make the area feel rougher. A clinician can review the pattern, medicines, general health, and glucose care rather than treating colour alone.

Keep folds dry, wash gently, and avoid bleaching products, harsh scrubs, and friction from tight clothing.
