What should you know about irritation bumps after shaving?

A close shave can leave short, cut hairs with a sharp edge that curves into nearby skin. This may create itchy or tender raised bumps, especially in tightly curled hair. Folliculitis can cause pimple-like spots around hairs, while keratosis pilaris tends to create many small rough bumps unrelated to one shaving session. Razor bumps, also called pseudofolliculitis barbae, often affect the beard or neck but can occur wherever hair is shaved.

Pause shaving over the affected skin until it settles. Use lukewarm water, a gentle fragrance-free cleanser, and a clean cool compress; avoid picking, squeezing, or digging for trapped hairs. When shaving resumes, soften hair first, use a clean sharp razor, shave in the direction of growth with light strokes, and avoid repeated passes. If episodes keep returning, discuss ingrown hairs, folliculitis, or laser hair removal with a clinician.

Arrange a review if bumps last beyond a reasonable healing period, recur despite changing technique, leave dark marks or scars, or spread beyond shaved areas. Seek prompt care for increasing warmth, swelling, pain, pus, fever, or a rapidly enlarging lump. Do not lance a deep or painful bump yourself.
