Irritated Throat and Runny Nose: What to Know

Allergic rhinitis presents with a clear runny nose, sneezing, an itchy throat, or symptoms after pollen, dust, or pet exposure. House dust mite allergy and pet allergy become more plausible when the pattern repeats in a particular environment and improves away from it.

A common cold can cause a runny nose and scratchy throat as the lining of the upper airway becomes inflamed. Influenza or COVID-19 may also cause these symptoms, often with fever, fatigue, aches, or cough. Sinusitis may cause facial pressure, reduced smell, or thicker drainage.

Drink regularly, choose warm fluids or soothing foods, and rest your voice. Saline nasal spray can ease dryness and help clear mucus. If using a nasal rinse, use sterile, distilled, or previously boiled and cooled water and clean the device as directed.

Limit smoke, dust, strong fragrances, and other personal triggers. A pharmacist can discuss an antihistamine or nasal treatment if allergy is suspected and check for interactions, pregnancy, or other health conditions. Wash hands, cover coughs and sneezes, and avoid close contact while an infection is possible.

Get urgent help for trouble breathing, inability to swallow liquids, drooling, severe dehydration, confusion, or rapidly increasing throat or facial swelling. Seek prompt advice for severe facial pain, a very high fever, or symptoms that improve and then become markedly worse.

Book a review if symptoms persist, recur frequently, interfere with sleep, or come with wheezing, chest pain, or a persistent cough. Mention recent travel, sick contacts, allergy triggers, and any medicines already tried.
