Irritated Eye and Runny Nose: What to Know

Allergic rhinitis commonly presents with a watery, itchy eye alongside clear nasal drainage, especially after exposure to pollen, dust, or an animal. House dust mite allergy and pet allergy are specific possibilities when symptoms recur in particular rooms or around pets.

A common cold can irritate the nose and eyes through inflammation and drainage. Influenza or COVID-19 may also cause upper-airway symptoms, particularly when fever, marked tiredness, body aches, or a new cough are present. Sinusitis may be considered when facial pressure, reduced smell, or thick drainage accompanies the problem.

Wash your hands, avoid rubbing the eye, and use a clean cool compress for comfort. Gently clear nasal drainage with tissues and keep hydrated. Saline nasal spray or rinse may loosen mucus; use sterile, distilled, or previously boiled and cooled water for a rinse.

Reduce likely triggers by keeping bedding clean, limiting dust, and moving away from smoke or strong fragrances. A pharmacist can explain whether an antihistamine or other allergy treatment is suitable for you, including interactions, pregnancy, or contact-lens use. Do not share towels, eye drops, or cosmetics.

Seek urgent care for severe eye pain, light sensitivity, a change in vision, an injury, chemical exposure, or swelling that affects the eyelids or breathing. Contact a clinician promptly if the eye is very red, symptoms are worsening, or you wear contact lenses and develop pain or redness.

Arrange medical advice if symptoms do not settle, keep returning, or are accompanied by high fever, breathing difficulty, dehydration, or significant facial pain. Stay home and follow local testing or infection advice when a contagious respiratory illness is possible.
