Irregular period while taking the mini pill

The progestogen-only pill changes cervical mucus and the womb lining, and some versions also suppress ovulation. Those effects can make bleeding patterns unpredictable. Spotting may happen, or a bleed may not appear when expected. Levonorgestrel is one progestogen used in contraception. Bleeding changes alone do not show whether the pill is working or whether a different condition is present; missed pills and pregnancy also need consideration.

Take each tablet at the time specified for your product. If a tablet is late or missed, follow the pack leaflet or ask a pharmacist about continued protection and whether additional contraception is needed. Record bleeding and any pain, discharge, illness, or medicine changes. Do not switch or stop the mini pill without a replacement plan if avoiding pregnancy is important. A clinician can compare it with options such as the combined pill.

Seek urgent care for severe or one-sided pelvic pain, fainting, or heavy bleeding. Ask for prompt advice if pregnancy is possible, bleeding follows sex, or bleeding comes with fever or unusual discharge. Make a routine appointment when the pattern is difficult to manage, continues after correct use, or you want to discuss another method.
