What should you know about ion surgical robot?

Ion is not an independent operator and does not decide what to remove. The surgeon controls a flexible catheter from a console, using live views and planning information to navigate toward a target, commonly a small lung nodule or another area in the chest. A procedure may collect tissue for laboratory testing rather than remove a whole tumour.

The approach may be considered when a target is difficult to reach with a standard bronchoscope. Suitability depends on the target's location, size, airway path, breathing status, medicines, and the team's experience. A robot-assisted procedure is still an invasive procedure with anaesthesia and possible bleeding or lung complications.

Ask what the procedure is intended to achieve: diagnosis, marking, or treatment. Confirm the type of anaesthesia, whether you need to fast, and which medicines such as blood thinners require a temporary plan. Bring prior scans and a current medicine list. Clarify how the sample will be tested and when results will be discussed.

Afterward, follow instructions about activity, eating, and medicines. Mild throat irritation can follow airway procedures, but the team should explain which symptoms are expected for your particular procedure.

Get urgent medical help for increasing shortness of breath, chest pain, fainting, blue lips, or coughing that produces more than a small amount of blood after the procedure. Contact the care team promptly for fever, worsening pain, persistent vomiting, or breathing symptoms that are not settling. Use the discharge number provided by the hospital if you are unsure how quickly to act.

Ask why Ion is being proposed, whether a non-robotic biopsy is suitable, how the target will be reached, what complications are possible, how medicines should be managed, and what happens if the sample is inconclusive.
