What should you know about an involuted fibroadenoma?

A fibroadenoma is made of glandular and connective breast tissue. Involution describes a natural change in its tissue pattern, often as hormonal stimulation changes. The lump can feel different from before, and imaging may show features that help distinguish it from other breast findings.

A known, stable involuted fibroadenoma is not the same as a new unexplained lump. Breast changes still need assessment when the diagnosis has not been confirmed, when the lump changes, or when the imaging appearance is not clearly benign.

Arrange a breast assessment if you have noticed a new lump or a change in a known one. The clinician may examine both breasts and review your history before recommending imaging. A breast ultrasound can help describe whether a finding is solid, fluid-filled or mixed, and whether it has reassuring features.

If imaging cannot establish the diagnosis, a needle biopsy may be offered. Removal is sometimes considered when a lump is growing, bothersome, difficult to assess, or not confidently benign. Do not squeeze or repeatedly check the area, as this can increase tenderness.

Seek prompt medical assessment for a rapidly enlarging breast lump, skin dimpling, nipple inversion that is new, spontaneous bloody discharge, an underarm lump, or redness with fever. These findings do not identify a cause on their own, but they should not be left unexplained.

Ask whether the imaging features support involution, whether follow-up imaging or biopsy is needed, what change should prompt an earlier review, and when removal would be useful.
