What should you know about introduction of flow cytometry?

Cells are suspended in fluid and may be treated with antibodies carrying fluorescent tags. As each cell crosses a laser beam, the instrument detects scattered light and fluorescence. These signals provide a profile of cell size, internal detail and selected surface or internal markers. The laboratory then compares profiles to recognise related cell groups.

Doctors may request this method when they need more detail about immune cells, blood cells or marrow cells. It can help describe an unusual population and guide classification, but it does not replace the history, examination, imaging or other pathology findings.

Your care team will explain how the sample is collected. The test may use blood or material obtained during a bone marrow biopsy, depending on the clinical question. Follow instructions about medicines and eating or drinking, and mention bleeding tendencies or previous reactions to medical materials.

Ask what the laboratory is looking for and whether the sample must reach the laboratory quickly. When the report returns, request a plain-language explanation of the cell markers, whether an abnormal population was found, and whether confirmation or additional testing is planned. Keep the report with other medical records for future appointments.

The flow cytometry analysis does not usually cause symptoms because it takes place on a collected sample. Get urgent help for fainting, breathing trouble, uncontrolled bleeding, or severe weakness after sample collection. Following a marrow collection, call the clinical team about persistent bleeding, fever, worsening pain, spreading redness or discharge from the site.
