Introduction to chikungunya

Short answer
Chikungunya is a mosquito-borne viral illness that commonly causes fever and pronounced joint pain, with symptoms that may persist after the initial illness.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What it means
Infected mosquitoes transmit the virus when they bite. Illness often begins after an incubation period with fever, joint pain, muscle aches, headache, tiredness, or a rash. Joint pain may affect the hands, wrists, ankles, knees, or other joints and can limit movement. Chikungunya can resemble other infections, so symptoms alone cannot confirm the diagnosis. Older adults, newborns, pregnant people, and people with long-term medical conditions may need closer clinical attention.
What you can do
Rest, drink fluids, and use only medicines that a clinician or pharmacist considers suitable for you. Prevent further mosquito bites with long sleeves, screens, and repellent; this is especially useful during the early illness when mosquitoes could acquire the virus from an infected person. A GP can review fever, joint pain, travel, and other possible causes. Avoid taking aspirin or anti-inflammatory medicine until dengue has been considered by a clinician.
When to seek care
Arrange medical advice for persistent fever, severe joint pain, dehydration, a widespread rash, or symptoms after travel to an area where mosquito-borne infections occur. Seek urgent help for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, repeated vomiting, bleeding, chest pain, or difficulty breathing. Infants, older adults, pregnant people, and anyone with significant health conditions should contact a clinician early rather than relying on self-care alone.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your symptoms fit chikungunya or another infection, whether testing is useful, which pain relief is appropriate, and how long to avoid mosquito exposure. Ask what changes would require urgent review.

Questions people ask

It is mainly spread by infected mosquitoes; ordinary casual contact does not usually transmit it.
Can joint pain continue after fever settles?
Yes. Joint pain can last beyond the initial fever and should be reviewed if it limits activity or does not improve.
